The courses are made possible by donors and are designed to be self-paced, so you can take them at your own leisure. You can create an account and enroll in as many courses as you'd like, all for free.

Who can take the free online courses offered by your academy?

Each course generally contains 6-8 lessons, ranging from 20-40 minutes, though there are some exceptions.

Do the courses offered by 1517 Academy offer certifications?

1517 Academy does offer certifications for each course, but it's important to note that these certifications are not affiliated with any academic institution. Rather, they are intended to recognize learners who have completed a course and have demonstrated a certain level of knowledge and understanding of the course material. These course certificates are available to learners at the end of the course, once they have completed all of the videos and exercises.

Transitioning from the Old Platform

When I transition to the new platform, will I be able to see my previous progress?

Unfortunately, you will not be able to access any previous course enrollment data in the new platform.

Can I begin where I left off on the new platform?

The new platform is not linked to the previous platform and so any progress attained will not be transferred.  You will be able to forward ahead in the video but your progress bar will not show as completed. We advise you to complete the course you are currently enrolled in before the old platform is closed. 

How long can I use the old platform?

The old platform will remain accessible until December 1, 2023. After this date, it will be fully retired, and you will no longer have access to its courses or features. We encourage you to transition to the new platform before the specified date to continue your learning journey without any disruptions. The new platform offers enhanced features and an improved learning experience to help you achieve your goals effectively.

How do I get my certificates?

Before the old platform is closed, make sure to download the certificates from your completed courses.
